How Long Should an eBook Be to Ensure Sales

Expert Author Yuwanda Black
I've been writing and selling ebooks online since 2004. This was long before self-publishing became the phenomenon it is now. And with e-readers like the Kindle and Nook selling millions of units per year, there's never been a better time to put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard) if you're a wannabe writer. But length stumps many new authors. One emailed me the following, stating:
I wrote a paperback then made a copy in epub. Both on Lulu. Short novel, 30,000 word or so. After reading how many books you write per year, I just wondered as to the length or word count of these books? I published two smaller ebooks on Kindle few days ago. 3,000 worder and 4,000 words respectively.
So my question is what would you consider the minimum word count for an ebook?

Before we tackle the question of how long should an ebook be, let's take a quick look at those who've taken the bull by the horns and learned how to write an ebook - turning their writing dreams into reality. The Growth of Self-Publishing
One publishing industry executive proclaimed 2012 to be part of the "golden age of self-publishing. She backed it up with statistics, ie:
Bowker's newest figures of books produced [showed that in 2011], there were 211,269 self-published titles (based on ISBNs) released, up from 133,036 in 2010. [Source: Publishers Weekly, BEA 2012: Self-Published Titles Topped 211,000 in 2011]

As these figures illustrate, the number of self-published ebook authors is growing exponentially. So, Just How Long Should an Ebook Be?
There's no right or wrong answer to this question. In my experience, it mainly depends on two things: (i) genre; and (ii) topic. For example, I write in the "how-to, non-fiction genre."
Most of my ebooks are on subjects I'm intimately familiar with, eg, freelance writing, self-publishing and internet / affiliate marketing. They tend to be between 40 and 60 pages (10,000 and 15,000 words (about 257 word per page)).
The funny thing is, I don't think about page count when I'm writing. I just write until I feel like I've addressed a topic in detail, then stop. It just so happens that this length seems to work for the (niche) topics I cover -and how I write.
I Googled the topic of " how long should an ebook be " and found various responses, ranging from:
Short non-fiction ebooks might be as little as 24 pages (6000 words), while longer ebooks are often between 10,000 and 20,000 words [Source: WarriorForum discussion on how long an ebook should be]; to
From 30 pages to 100 pages-that is the "average" size for most eBooks for sale online. This is usually long enough to be impressive but short enough to keep your audience enthralled throughout. [Source: WordsYouWant website]
Writing an Ebook: The Bottom Line on Page Count and Publishing One That Sells
Buyers purchase ebooks for many reasons, eg, to be transported by a story (fiction); or to learn how to do something (how-to, non-fiction).
Hence, how long your ebook should be is less important than knowing your audience, and why they purchase ebooks like yours. Then, give them a quality product that fulfills their need. If you do this, you'll find success writing ebooks that sell - no matter how long or short they are.

Information Publishing for All Age Groups

Expert Author Kenneth Rowland
The writings of Napoleon Hill and other authors of the early 20th century, pre-date the Internet but the principles which such works encompass are just as valid today as they were at the time of first publication.
The great author's followers such as Henry Ford and Andrew Carnegie to name but two amongst many, through their talent and creative ability, produced incredible achievements. Their work has proved beneficial to all mankind besides making them personally very wealthy.
I have no reservations in advising all who have ambitions to gain financial freedom to read 'Think and Grow Rich,' and to use its teachings to succeed in their own chosen fields.
There are very distinct differences between the present and the past, but today, after due research, I see far more opportunities to be successful than ever existed in Ford and Carnegie's day.
I want to help people who are willing to devote time and effort to reach their personal goals. The internet is a powerful tool which should be exploited to it's fullest potential and since written material can be easily downloaded to customers searching for information, I suggest that Information Publishing is the way forward.
So that's the introduction or shall I say the pre-amble out of the way - so where do we go from here?
The first point of note is that most people know something about something. You might not be too good a writer and sadly lacking in confidence but all skills today can be outsourced and once again this further demonstrates the internet's power as a medium of communication.
I get very annoyed when I hear people saying "I can't." This smacks of making an excuse not to go any further - of idleness in fact! If you are the sort who is frightened of having to exercise your brain and start doing, then read no further because this isn't for you. I also hear the excuse of some who say they are the wrong age to attempt anything new. Now take my word for it, becoming an Information Publisher is within the realm of ALL AGE GROUPS.
Let's first consider youth. If you read the stories of some of the best known entrepreneurs both past and present, you will find a common thread which occurs over and over again. They all started making things happen before they'd finished their formal education. For many, education was very much kept on the back burner because all their efforts went into developing money making projects. Lord Beaverbrook is a prime example of such a person because despite extraordinary achievement in several fields of influence, he could never profess to be well educated in a formal sense.
A friend of mine has a 13 year old son who spends every available hour scouring the web looking for money making opportunities. He tells everyone that he will be a millionaire by the age of 25. Another boy in his class also bangs on about making an early fortune but this lad, although also computer literate uses the available technology to play video games and send text after useless text to his 'cool' mates. There's no prizes for guessing which one will more likely be the achiever!
The first decades of this new century have witnessed severe economic downturn at a global level. Many adults have lost their 9 to 5 jobs and only a small percentage will have made contingency plans to support themselves and their families. After all, to many loyal workers that well paid job which they enjoyed, was forever!
Being out of work can be very expensive because a person has more time to spend money if only to keep depression at bay; but hope springs eternal. This disaster may prove to be a blessing in disguise.
A redundant worker now has an opportunity to build a business in which he is answerable only to himself and the internet and Information Publishing can be the answer In fact, once set up it's a business which can run on auto-pilot and be extremely lucrative. Even those who have only ever produced physical goods should be able to outsource writers who can put together information products using dictated knowledge.
Now for the seniors, and I'm one of them! No longer able to pursue physical activities which were so much part of life a few years ago, those hours still need to be productively filled. All that experience accumulated over many years can now be monetized. Although you can't handle the graft to grow sweet peas, you can still tell people what to do.
The use of a computer might well address another issue. A lot of aging people have not the confidence to cope with new technology but the day is fast approaching when everything, such as payment of bills etc., will need people to be computer literate. The message? Start today by making money with Information Publishing.
That's it for now but let me say what I intend to do.
Many so called gurus only speak in general terms on a subject, so I want to talk about business models which I have used to get what success I've achieved to date. My next article will list the operations I have used as an Affiliate Marketer and subsequent articles will consider each item in turn.
A FREE downloadable copy of 'Think and Grow Rich' is available from http://www.netfount.com together with other vintage books which are essential reading for the modern day entrepreneur.

The Most Popular iPad and iPhone Apps for Video Production

Ever since the release of the iPhone and later the iPad, there has been a continual roll out of applications or apps aimed at the video production market. Some have come and gone but many have now become an indispensable part of our kit, providing convenience and in some cases replacing high priced production equipment.
Pre Production
Some of the most useful apps have been designed for use in pre production and planning. Often taking the place of expensive desktop software and in some cases adding additional usability.
Scripting apps such as script pro allow users to write scripts with the aid of pop up menus and short cuts straight onto your iPad.
It is also compatible with industry standard software such as final draft. It also senses when an external keyboard is plugged into the iPad and eliminates the onscreen keyboard for an even larger view.
Another extremely useful app is Hitchcock storyboard composer. This is a very well thought out storyboard app which allows the user to upload multiple images from your libraries, add music, notes and of course shot descriptions. It also emulates camera moves such as pans, tilts and dolly movements. Your storyboard can then be exported as a PDF or even played back as a movie.
Production
Perhaps some of the most popular apps are those used for production, such as movie slate or DSLR slate which replace the need for costly clapper boards.
The movie slate app does everything you need a clapper to do and then some. You can make comprehensive voice and image notes, export reports and ingest shot data in editing platforms such as final cut pro. You can also sync timecode between cameras, between other iPads or iPhones, with a clock time and even sync with an iTunes song, if you're shooting a music video.
Telepromptor apps are also gaining in popularity too. The pro promtor app lets you edit the presentation text and has a customizable scrolling screen of text where you can adjust size and speed. Another handy feature is the ability to sync between iPads so your presenter can talk to numerous cameras displaying the same text.
There are also several editing packages available such as iMovie, a portable version of the popular desktop software for Mac. It's surprisingly flexible with many of the usual features. Users are able to edit existing footage or shoot more with the built in 1080p HD capability of the iPad camera. This is of course not going to be as good as a professional camcorder but is very useful for shot planning, location scouting and story boarding.
And when you're finished, the sharing possibilities are endless. Upload to YouTube or Vimeo, to a cloud or website or even play it on a big screen TV using airplay.
The iPhone and iPad have brought lots of new possibilities to the world of video production and i for one think video production is the better for it.

What Must a Developer Know Before Building Your Website?

So you have decided to have a website developed for your business. Now the planning for this project starts. What do you want your website to look like? What style should it have? What information do you want to put on your website? These are all questions that start popping up when you start considering the idea of having a website to represent your business on the internet.
Most website designers or website developers will give you a list of information that they will need to build your website for you. But instead of going into your website design or development project unprepared, you can use the information in this article to help you be ready with all the information that your developer will need. This will save a considerable amount of time in the actual development of your website.
Appearance
Most companies in operation already have a logo that they use on their company signage and company stationery. It is a good idea to mirror the look of your company logo on your new website. Your website developer will definitely want you to send them your company logo.
If your company does not have a company logo, you will have to seriously consider getting one designed.
The style of your company logo or company branding will largely determine the style of your website.
Pages
You will have to decide, based on the information that you want to display on your website, what pages you want on your website. Make a list of all the pages that you will need on your site to give your company the best possible representation and so that you clients can get the most information of what services or products you supply.
Some popular website pages are
Home, About Us, Services, Products, Image Gallery, Contact Us, Testimonials and FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions).
Information
Using the list of pages that you have chosen for your website will make it easier for you to put together the information that you want on your site. Starting with the first page on your list, write down all the information that you want to relay to your audience through your site.
Consider the About Us page and use this page to tell your audience about your company in detail. The same will go for all the other pages in your site.
Images
Images are a very important part of websites. Internet surfers often respond much more and much more positively to images that portray the image of your business.
Think about the products or services that your company offers and choose images that will not only show your products or services clearly, but will also bring out the best reputation of your company.
Developers use images in two ways on a website: as part of the content on your site (in between the text) and as part of image galleries. Image galleries are a nice way to show off your products, services or company events.
Contact Information
Make sure that you have all your contact details ready to send to your website developer. It will serve absolutely no purpose to have a website to reach your potential customers, but no contact information available for your potential customers to contact you.
The more contact information that you can offer, the better. Consider creating social media pages or profiles for your company so that you can offer many and varied avenues for your potential clients to communicate with you.
Keywords
A good website developer will make your website search engine friendly by optimising your site with keywords or key phrases. Remember that your web developer is an expert in developing websites and that he or she might not necessarily be an expert in the kind of business that you run.
It is an excellent idea to prepare a list of keywords or key phrases for your web developer so that he or she can build it into the code of your website.
Creating a website for your business is an exciting step forward for any company. Ensure that you have most of your planning complete in the form of the information that you will present to your developer. It will be a rewarding and time-saving experience that will ensure a successful outcome for your website.

From Visitors to Business Partners Even on the Field of How to Earn Money Online for Kids

Businesses are built mostly on the premise of making money through selling products and offering services to their target market. Naturally, a business' best efforts are directed toward gaining more clients who will purchase the products offered to them. This is why most marketing campaigns are customized to suit the kind of target market that a specific company caters to. The intent is, of course, to encourage people to purchase the product offered by the company and then refer it to their own set of friends and relatives to further boost the business' sales.
The same principle works on online companies and franchises. Even if they are based on the Web, the intention still remains to be the act of generating sales that would allow the business to grow successfully. Nowadays, even businesses focused on how to earn money online for kids already understand the importance of having a good sales record. Hence, they aim their best strategies to attract website visitors that can be potential clients.
However, what most people forget is that attracting potential clients is only part of the whole system. On the other side, there is the need to enhance the business' systems and back room components. This would help the company be in a better shape to continue with its operations regardless of the changes in their market's demands. For example, if a business is set on how to earn money online for kids, the operational requirements like equipment and manpower are essential to ensure that the products are sold and the customers are taken care of properly.
This is why most online business owners opt to open up their companies for franchising. They utilize marketing strategies to attract website visitors that are potential business partners or franchisees. In principle, the objective is to gather more people who would operate a branch of the company to cater to a different segment of the online market. This would benefit the company in such a way that there would be income to be generated from the franchisees' payments and the brand would be promoted to a wider market. Converting website visitors to be business partners may be quite a different task from encouraging people to be customers. Here are some tips on how this can be done:
1. Offer potential business partners an efficient money-making system.
Sometimes, people become interested in franchising a business more because of how easy and convenient running it would be. They would be more interested in becoming business partners if they would see that in joining the company they stand to gain professional growth, financial benefits, and a better lifestyle among others. Therefore, it is essential that the business and operational system that would be offered to them would not be difficult to maintain.
2. Be transparent in telling potential business partners what the company is all about.
Answering questions and concerns of potential business partners fosters trust between them and the company. If such is the case, then companies should always consider telling their leads about what the nature of the company is and what can be expected from it. Sharing visions and principles is just as essential to foster harmony and unity.
3. Show potential business partners a strong network support system.
A plus factor that can encourage people to buy a franchise from a certain company is the kind of support they would get from the franchisor down to their fellow franchisees. If the company's training and support systems are working well, it would promote a sense of security among the potential business partners. They would also feel that the company puts a premium on the enhancement of their knowledge of the business. Transparency would indeed help the company gain the trust of their potential business partners.
All businesses, even if they are geared on how to earn money online for kids, would definitely benefit from having leads or business partners. The benefits extend from being merely monetary to something that would help improve the nature of the business for a more long-term purpose, which is what an online business really needs. Therefore, online companies must really place a premium on encouraging website visitors to be their business partners.

Online Success in Creating Quality Blogs For Freelancers

People are creating blogs on a daily basis. They are 175,000 blogs created worldwide per day but 95% of the blogs end up being abandoned. The reasons as to why the blogs fail to succeed are:
Money - Majority of bloggers rush to monetize their blog. Well, let me say this it takes a lot of time, strategy and hard work before you earn a dollar.
Lack of Time - Creating a post takes time investment. It takes time to research, set up links, choosing photos, SEO, proofreading and promoting.
Rushing to Build Traffic - You are not patient especially when it comes to generating traffic. You want your blog to generate huge traffic when it's still one year old. You should focus on creating solid content, proper SEO methods and promotions. Don't look at your analytics every ten minutes, it will drive you nuts.
Setting Unrealistic Goals - Expectations created by people that anyone can do this with little or no effort.
You are focused on yourself - When blogging, the reader does not care about your products or services. They care about you solving their problems and getting access to great information.
Most successful blogs are easy to read, simple to understand and straight to the point. But, after doing thorough research about how blogs end up being successful, I realized that the blog creators have several things in common or share these three secrets: Attitude, Confidence and Destiny
Attitude
Attitude is the tendency to respond positively or negatively towards a certain idea, object, person, or situation. Attitude influences an individual's choice of action and responses to challenges, incentives and rewards. When writing posts in your blog, you must choose to focus your attention on what you can do and what you will achieve online. Your blog is the product and result of your choices. You always have a choice. You can choose to let the current statistics of 95% failure rate on blogs affect you or you can choose to look for opportunities in the face of adversity and challenge. Remember, you are targeting online users or freelancers that are figuring out how they can start their own online businesses or look for freelance jobs. The readers are looking at you as an online jobs freelance mentor. If they sense that you have a positive attitude, they will keep on referring to your post and they will each create a back link to your post.
Confidence
Confidence is generally described as a state of being certain of either a prediction is correct or that a chosen course of action is the best or the most effective. When you create a blog and struggle to keep writing, that's when confidence begins. You need confidence in life to make difficult decisions, attract friends and to stand out in this increasingly competitively world. In confidence writing, readers can tell if you are confident with yourself. Once they sense that you have that quality, then they will start commenting or sharing your blog posts. When applying confidence in writing blogs, you need to read widely in new genres and formats, and not just within your own area of expertise. Seeing how other authors formulate their paragraphs and project meaning will help formulate structures in your own mind. The more widely you can read the more expansive your points of reference and the influences you can draw on when you sit down to put pen to paper. Therefore, the more you write, the more confident you will be in online writing.
Destiny
Destiny is the hidden power believed to control what will happen in the future. In other words destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved. Before deciding to become an online freelance writer you must ask yourself this type of questions," Do I have enough commitment to make this work? Do I have enough passion for this to continue when the going gets tough?" You must know your overall purpose in life. It can take years for the answer to come. What makes a blog successful is that the writer knows his or her overall purpose in life. You cannot wake up in the morning and say that you will create a blog about cars and your passion is painting. For you to determine your destiny, you must think hard and look for a passion. Then write about it. Most of these online users are looking for advice about freelance jobs and when they visit your blog, they can sense if you are passionate about what you are writing about or not.

Crucial Steps You Need to Take When Website Downtime Hits

Your website goes down and your website monitoring service has notified you of the fact. The text message or phone call has come in and you're now aware of the site outage. The question is, what happens next? Here are some things you need to do to proactively get your site back up and running as soon as possible and minimize the damage the downtime can cause.
1. Check the Site Outage for Yourself
First things first, make sure your site is really down. Your website monitor may have alerted you of an outage, but your hosting company may have been the outage if it just lasted just a few moments. The problem may actually already be resolved.
To check the status of your site, pull up your URL on your computer. Once you're at your website, push down the shift button and click refresh. This will ensure that you aren't staring at a cached version of your site and that you're looking at the actual site itself. If your site is indeed down, there are some steps you're going to want to take to mitigate any damage.
2. Contact Your Hosting Provider
Your hosting provider is likely aware of the issue, but communication is key in getting the issue resolved. The saying is that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Well, if your site is down and no one is complaining, your hosting provider won't be in any rush to get the site back up and running again. If, however, you communicate aggressively, then your hosting provider will likely get into gear to get the site back up.
When contacting your hosting provider, make sure you ask them what is causing the outage and ask for an estimated time of restoration. You need to know why your site is down and when it will be back up because you're going to need to communicate these facts to your customers.
3. Contact Your Email List
You should have an email list of customer contacts. Send out an email letting customers know the reason for the site outage and when they can expect the site to be up and running again. Also be sure to utilize social media sites like Twitter and Facebook to communicate with your site's visitors regarding the outage. The last thing you want to do is leave your customers in the dark. Communication is the key to maintaining your company's reputation. A little bit of communication can go a long way when it comes to customer satisfaction.
4. Pause Your Online Advertising
If you use pay-per-click advertising, put on pause until the site is back up and running. Chances are that the downtime is going to cost you profits already. The last thing you want to do is pay for advertising that will do you no good due to the fact that people who click the advertising link will arrive at a site that isn't available. Don't pay for clicks that won't generate sales. You can reactivate the advertising campaign once your site is back up and running again.
5. Stay on Top of the Outage
If your site is still down after the timeframe the host gave you then contact your host again. If the host isn't able to resolve the problem in a responsive manner, it may be time to change hosting providers. Remember, you rely on the reliability of your web host to maintain your site's availability and your profits. If you can't count on them to do this, then you need to begin looking elsewhere so you can host your site with a provider that is more responsive to your needs.
